Road Safety: Mortality for 17% decrease in January in Continental France, a slight increase abroad

203 people lost their lives on the roads of Metropolitan France in January 2025. The number of serious injured is also decreasing during the same period.

The number of deaths on the roads of Continental France registered a 17% decrease in January 2025 compared to January 2024, with a total of 203 people murdered, road safety announced on Monday. The number of serious injuries during these same periods has also decreased (-9%), with 934 serious injuries identified last month.

In January, mortality was marked “by a decrease in the death of motorists” with 97 motorists killed, 21 less than in January 2024, said the National Interministerial Observatory for Mental Security. The number of deaths also fell among cyclists, six killed against 15 in January 2024, and cyclists: 21 lost their lives against 40 last year in the same period.

More killed pedestrians

But the number of pedestrians murdered on the roads increased: 61 lost their lives in January 2025, 12 more than in January 2024. In total, the police counted 3,764 body traffic accidents in continental France in January 2025.

The interminostrical delegate for road safety, Florence Guillaume, recalled in this press release the road safety rules, especially in the mountains, calling the press release to “particular surveillance for trips linked to winter holidays.”

The phone, responsible for one in four body accidents

“I remember the need to respect the safety rules, put your smartphone in driving mode, take regular breaks and, if you go to the mountain areas, think about putting chains in your trunk or equipping the snow tires of your vehicle” , said.

“Driving distractors, which are often the phone, is present in one in four body accidents,” he added.

On the roads abroad, 20 people were killed, a 5% figure compared to the same period last year.

The number of body accidents (285) and injured (364) also increased slightly last month in foreign territories, an increase of 1% and 2% respectively.
