Driving license: Should we increase the minimum number of handling hours?

Historical players in the sector are favorable to a minimum number of mandatory hours for practical training, currently 20 hours to 28 hours. This would not change much in fact with an average duration currently 30 hours.

The driver’s license remains the most often in France with more than 1.5 million candidates every year. But with training that represents a significant cost, almost 1,800 euros on average.

An amount directly linked to the amount of hours required before spending the practical test, with at least 20 hours, but much more for some candidates.

Towards an extension at least 28 hours?

An amount directly linked to the amount of hours required before spending the practical test, with at least 20 hours, but much more for some candidates for those who can spend up to 28 hours, for example. Management schools communicate an average figure of 35 hours of driving before winning their license.

“We, in the field, 20 hours is a minimum and then we do an evaluation to give a more precise and individual estimate. But he believes that it will be 20 hours to give an illusion,” explains Sandra Casco, president of the National Union of Independents of Driving.

However, an idea that divides, because if many candidates go far beyond these 20 mandatory hours, others are closer to this legal minimum. However, it is this amount of hours of education of the steering wheel, or practical training, which strongly influences the price of this training.

“The training requirements are very heterogeneous, they depend on the student’s level when it reaches the management school and, therefore, the direct consequence will be an increase in the driver’s bill,” said Flavien The Rendering, co -founder of Ornikar.

Reduce the accompanied driving age

For Patrick Mirouse, president of the ECF (French driving school), the license price also remains a central theme related to this number of hours:

“The national average is now 30 hours: 35 hours for the classic sector and 28 hours to drive accompanied.”

For him, this minimum number of hours that would take to 28 hours, therefore, would not change much, since the average is already at 30 hours.

“Today, those who say that this will increase the price of permission by 20% This is not true,” insists Patrick Mirouse.

For him, “the important thing is to have a progressive learning of driving,” welcoming the fall in the minimum age to approve the license, which is dedicated at age 17 since last year:

“The more we learn young people, the more we are motivated (…), we should spend the driving accompanied at 14: 14 years are the crossroads of mobility, with more and more edpm such as scooters or even quadruple with cars.”
