Electric car: The gray card will no longer be free of May 1 (except a region)

The Gray Card will be paid again from May 1, reveals the Magazine Auto Plus. A fiscal gift practiced since 2020 and will remain updated only in Hauts-de-France for zero emission models.

The Gray Gray card for electricity ends from May 1. This is revealed by Auto Plus magazine in its last issue: the end of a tax gift by 2020 and that aimed to promote sales of zero problems.

Since then, sales have increased well and other “alternative energy” vehicles (hybrid, E85, LPG …) could also benefit from a free price or a price divided by two.

A significant source of income for the regions

Result: 65% of the market was “exempt” last year, says Auto Plus. However, this unexpected gain of gray cards represents the third fiscal year for the regions after VAT and Ticpe (internal consumption tax on energy products).

Pushed by the Government and the Financial Law of 2025, the Regional Councils had to govern on the maintenance or not of a preferential regime only for 100% electric cars. In addition to Hauts-de-France, all regions have decided to end this exemption.

“In five years, we have gone from 2.2 million records of new cars to 1.7 million, so it is a deficit for the regions. In almost all regions, the fiscal horse has increased at the beginning of the year and now we make electric cars pay,” explains Yves Carra in BFMTV, spokesman for the France Association of the Mobilité Club.

How much does it cost?

A price of the fiscal horse that varies according to the regions: it is, for example, 43 euros in Auverne-Rhône-Alpes and in Corsica and can reach a maximum of 60 euros. This is the case in Brittany, in Center-Val de Loire in the Grand Est or even in Normandy.

Then it is necessary to multiply this price by the number of taxes: two, for example, for a small spring of Dacia, five for an R5, seven for a Peugeot E-3008 and 15 for a Tesla model there.

In total, Auto Plus estimates that this end of exemption for electricity could represent 640 million euros in additional income for the regions. A “minimum estimate”, specifies the magazine, since it is based on the level of sales last year, while sales of zero emission models continue to progress in the new as sometimes.
