Several hundred vehicles still affected by defective airbags from Takata in Guadalupe

In Guadalupe, 2,742 vehicles are still affected by the defective Takata airbag campaign, underlines the vehicle distributor identified in a fatal accident at the beginning of the week.

The day after the confirmation of a new death in Guadalupe, linked to a defective airbag takata, in a Toyota Hilux vehicle, the brand distributor in the archipelago said Tuesday that more than 2,700 vehicles were still affected. The Takata Airbags scandal has been shaking the automotive sector since 2014, forcing in recent months to the immobilization of hundreds of thousands of vehicles by many manufacturers to change this equipment at the origin of more than a dozen deaths in France.

To date, “96 owners are unattainable, the addresses known in the SIV (vehicle registration system, note) that are not correct or letters not recovered by the recipients,” he explains again. Tristan de Reynal states that the distributor, with “1,823 airbags in shares”, is “capable of satisfying the demand of immediate” and has “the means to change all the remaining airbags.”

The company also announced the celebration of a press conference on June 3 to “reach the maximum of owners” still worried.

Beyond Toyota, other brands are affected by these defective airbags, starting with Citroën, which has led a stop campaign for its vehicles for several months.

Eleven deaths identified abroad

The Foreign Ministry requested the regrouping of the specialized interregional jurisdiction (JIR) of Paris of all the surveys carried out on the consequences of the failures of these airbags, in particular those related to the homicide. Until Monday’s announcement of a new victim linked to these Takata air bags, the Ministry of Transportation listed 29 accidents that caused 11 deaths abroad and one in Continental France.

Due to a poorly aged gas, Takata Airbags is likely to fail exploiting pieces on the faces of the drivers. Its degradation accelerates under warm and humid climates.
