“On the road, 8 out of 10 deaths are men.” The new road prevention campaign that will be launched on Wednesday, February 8, puts its finger on the sore spot of a lack of men according to her: excessive and out of place virility.
This is demonstrated by their recklessness on the road as soon as they have a steering wheel or a handlebar in their hands and even when they are pedestrians. The title of this call for prudence and conscience is based on a film by Rémi Bezançon. It will be broadcast on television, social networks and cinemas. Its title is clear:
“Be the man you want to be, but be a living man!”
Virility and Risk Taking
The figures collected attest to behaviors with serious consequences for men and their environment. According to a provisional evaluation of the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR) for 2022, 78% of the deceased were men, 84% of those allegedly responsible for fatal accidents are men, 93% of drunk drivers involved in an accident are men and 88% of young drivers killed are men.
“It is urgent, in the field of driving, to free men from social expectations that encourage them to associate virility and risk-taking,” warns Seguridad Vial in its campaign that targets masculine behavior on the road.
This attitude is not unique to France. In the UK, the guardian counted the number of collisions involving a pedestrian and a driver in Britain over an 18-month period between 2020 and 2021. The results are startling: 4,363 men were involved in collisions with pedestrians, compared to 1,473 women.
