85.2% of motorists drive alone in their car in the morning, according to a study published this Tuesday by the highway manager Vinci, which analyzes the data provided by the cameras on its highways. Of the million vehicles analyzed between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m., when leaving for work, only 14.8% carried more than one person.
The rate of “autosolismo” is 87% between 7:00 am and 8:30 am, then begins to decrease to reach 79% at 10:00 am. This second barometer published by Vinci is the result of the analysis of traffic between May and June 2022 on motorways near eleven large French cities. “Autosolism” increased sharply in the spring (+2.6 points) in certain areas compared to the first Vinci analyzes in the fall of 2021.
Highways generate 25% of CO2 emissions from transport
The proportion of drivers alone in their car reached 98.6% on the A11 motorway near Nantes (+5.4%) and 81.5% on the A10 south of Paris (+9.2%). Fighting “autosolismo”, in particular through carpooling, is an important way to limit traffic and thus air pollution.
“We are convinced that shared mobility can be used in journeys from home to work: it depends on all mobility actors, operators, communities, the State, travel associations, consult together and provide concrete solutions”, emphasizes Amélia Rung, Development Director of VINCI Autoroutes.
Motorways represent 1% of the French road network, but 30% of the distances traveled and 25% of CO2 emissions from transport, according to Road Union. Vinci, which markets its counting solution through its subsidiary Cyclope.ai, plans to release two updates to its barometer per year.
