Catania airport, the largest in Sicily, announced on Twitter that it will remain closed until 12:00 GMT on Wednesday after a fire broke out overnight from Sunday to Monday before being brought under control by firefighters.
“Flight operations are suspended until Wednesday, July 19 at 2:00 p.m. local time,” the airport said briefly on its Twitter account on Monday. According to the media, the fire started shortly before midnight and was not controlled until dawn, without causing fatalities.
Two days to repair and ventilate the building.
The passengers who were there were all evacuated by security personnel, a thick smoke having invaded a large part of this international airport.
The two days of delay for the reopening of the airport should make it possible to repair the damage caused by the fire and to ventilate the building still impregnated with the smell of smoke, according to the media.
