Eramet indicated this Wednesday that its activities in Gabon are “stopped”.
“Following the latest events,” the group “put an end” to its activities in Gabon and is “monitoring” the situation to “protect the safety of (its) personnel and the integrity of (its) facilities,” it said. Eramet employs around 8,000 people in the country, mostly Gabonese.
The soldiers announced on Wednesday that they were going to “put an end to the current regime” in Gabon, a coup against outgoing President Ali Bongo, in power for 14 years and whose re-election had just been announced overnight.
The group is present in Gabon through two subsidiaries. One, the Comilog company (the Ogooué mining company) specializes in the extraction of manganese, a mineral of which Eramet is the second highest quality producer in the world.
Setrag (la Société d’exploitation du transgabonais), the second subsidiary of the French group, operates the railway line that connects the Atlantic coast with the southeast of the mineral-rich country through Gabon’s equatorial forest.
The company transports minerals and passengers over 650 km.
