Up to 4.5 hours of waiting: the Mont-Blanc tunnel saturated after the landslide in the Alps

The Prefecture of Haute-Savoie asks motorists to avoid the Mont-Blanc tunnel valley to head to Italy. Local elected officials call for the development of the railway to the detriment of the road for the transport of goods.

It is better to avoid these days to take the Mont-Blanc tunnel towards Italy. Following the landslide that occurred this Sunday in the town of Saint-André, in Savoie, and the closure of the A43 motorway in Maurienne, road traffic has shifted to other axes, making traffic conditions especially difficult, in particular in the Chamonix valley and in the Mont-Blanc tunnel, the main passage to reach Italy.

4h30 of waiting to access the tunnel.

Traffic in the tunnel, which during this season amounts to about 1,500 heavy vehicles a day, has doubled since the beginning of the week, causing several kilometers of traffic jams.

Postpone travel if possible

The Prefect of Haute-Savoie invites drivers of heavy vehicles not to head in the direction of the Arve valley to access the Mont-Blanc tunnel, but to take the recommended alternative routes (towards A8 and Ventimiglia) and for all users , when it is possible. , to postpone travel in the sector.

In this context of congestion, the elected representatives of the community of municipalities of the Chamonix valley launched an appeal on Tuesday to the government to relaunch the reflection on the modal shift towards the railway for the transport of goods.

They want the controversial Lyon-Turin cross-border link project to be completed by 2032 to increase “from 8% to 40% the goods transported by rail between France and Italy, and thus delay more than ‘one million trucks on rails’.
