Inflation: System U boss says ‘shopping cart contents have changed profoundly’

According to Dominique Schelcher, inflation has changed the purchasing behavior of consumers in supermarkets.

In the face of inflation, the French are permanently changing their supermarket habits. Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard even recently warned of a “consumer tsunami”.

“Three Frenchmen”

For the general manager of U stores, it is now “three France”. “A third of the French are in great difficulty […]with a part of the French who no longer even eat their fill,” said Dominique Schelcher. In addition, if “before we ended the month on the 20th or 25th, now it is the 10th or 15th,” he added. The second third, “is the France of the middle classes, the France of the retirees” who have “changed their behaviour” and “that’s what’s new”, he added.

They are, for example, the ones who go [acheter] less meat because it has become too expensive, [acheter] smaller brands because they have become too expensive and [préférer] buy a private label product”, according to Dominique Schelcher, for whom only a “small third” of French people still have enough income “not to look at the bill”.

“Under the impact of inflation, people go to the essentials” and “at the end of the day there are fewer products in the shopping cart,” underlines the head of System U.
