Civil aviation: the UN agency reaches an agreement for carbon neutrality in 2050

Representatives from 193 states at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) agreed on Friday on a goal of carbon neutrality in global aviation by 2050.

Representatives from the 193 States gathered for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) assembly have reached “historic agreement on an ambitious collective long-term goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050,” ICAO said on Twitter. The Montreal-based organization is a UN agency.

Responsible for 2.5 to 3% of global CO2 emissions

Indeed, air travel is regularly highlighted for its role in the climate crisis. Currently responsible for 2.5-3% of global CO2 emissions, the sector is having a hard time switching to renewable energy, even if the aeronautics industry and energy companies are working hard on it.

According to the airlines, creating carbon-free aviation represents $1.55 billion of investment between 2021 and 2050.
