Lack of income, small pension, high family burdens: poverty is linked to various professional and personal situations, according to an INSEE study published this Tuesday, which defines six profiles of poor households. More than nine million people live below the poverty line in France, or on less than 1,120 euros per month for a single person, according to 2020 data from the National Institute of Statistics.
Households made up of retired people (first group) represent 27% of poor households. These are mainly people who live alone, more often in rural areas. Employed but low-income households (18% of poor households, second group) are mainly families with children, often located in north-west France and in the former regions of Rhône-Alpes and Franco-France.
People under 30 years old represent 11% of poor households
As for unemployed people, those under 30 years of age (11% of poor households) live mainly alone in large cities. These are students, young people in the professional integration phase or the unemployed (third group).
Among the unemployed poor over 30 years of age, we find people who own their home and benefit from unemployment benefits (10%, fourth group) and renters whose income comes from social benefits.
“Those from the private sector (17%, fifth group) are overrepresented throughout the Mediterranean arc,” while those from the social sector (17%, sixth group) “90% reside in urban areas and are relatively more present in the Mediterranean arc”. “northern half” of France, details INSEE.
