After Esso-ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies unions also renew their strike

While the government renewed its calls to lift refinery and warehouse blockades on Tuesday morning, TotalEnergies employees voted to resume the strike, as did those at Esso-ExxonMobil.

Several unions renewed strikes at TotalEnergies and Esso-ExxonMobil on Tuesday despite government pressure and a majority wage agreement signed at Esso-ExxonMobil. The CGT and FO decided to renew this Tuesday the strike that affects the two French refineries of the Esso-ExxonMobil group, the day after the signing of an agreement on wages by the CFDT, which thus joined the CFE-CGC, while that CGT and FO rejected this agreement.

At TotalEnergies, strikers also opted to extend the strike, despite the government’s call to lift warehouse blockades “without delay,” said Eric Sellini, the group’s CGT coordinator.

The Government calls for the end of confinements without delay

“We are doing everything possible to put an end to this situation,” government spokesman Olivier Véran said the day after an emergency meeting in Matignon, raising the possibility of making requisitions or reopening access to warehouses.

Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire went further. “There is only one solution: the unblocking of fuel depots and refineries without delay,” he declared on franceinfo, calling for negotiations at TotalEnergies to start “today”, Tuesday. “There is no longer any reason for there to be any blockage” at Esso-ExxonMobil, Olivier Véran said.

But if the CFDT and the CFE-CGC are the majority within the group, the CGT and FO unions, at the origin of the strike movement, represent more than 50% of the Fos-sur-Mer refinery staff. In Notre-Dame-de-Gravenchon, the situation is “very balanced between the four unions”, with CFDT and CFE-CGC on the one hand representing just over 50% and the rest being shared between CGT and FO, according to Christophe Aubert, central union delegate of the CGT.

The government is discussing with TotalEnergies to extend its reimbursement

At TotalEnergies, “we are still awaiting details in terms of negotiations by the management” and therefore the employees “revoted by a large majority” this morning’s strike, explained Eric Sellini. At the same time, the government is “discussing with Total” so that there can be “an extension of a few days of the discount” established by the group, said Olivier Véran.

This reduction of 20 cents per liter granted by the energy company was to end on November 1.
