Combat helicopter: Instead of the American Black Hawk, the Netherlands chooses the Airbus Caracal

Compared to the American Sikorsky helicopter, the Netherlands opted for the Caracal H225M from Airbus. This contract for 14 aircraft is estimated between 1 and 2.5 billion euros.

Faced with the UH-60M Black Hawk from the American Sikorsky, the Netherlands decided. The Dutch armed forces will be equipped with the new European H225M Caracal. According to a note discovered by The galery In the Official Journal of the European Union, an order was placed for 14 aircraft from Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter) for an estimated amount of between 1,000 and 2,500 million euros.

This multipurpose helicopter will replace the 12 Cougars of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The Netherlands becomes the twelfth country to be equipped after France, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

Compatible with biofuels

The H225M was selected for its performance. It can transport 29 soldiers or ten stretchers and four caregivers in its “medical” version. But above all, it can fly very long distances thanks to in-flight refueling. It is also compatible with biofuels up to 30% of the tank.

The Dutch Caracals will begin delivery in 2028 to enter service with the armed forces in 2030.
