MEPs ask for emergency aid for organic farming

A cross-partisan amendment was adopted Monday approving $271 million in emergency aid for organic farming. The government opposes it.

Deputies approved on Monday the creation of emergency aid of 271 million euros to support organic farming, adopting a transpartisan amendment against the opinion of the Government.

The amendment was approved by 25 votes in favor (20 against), as part of the review of the expenditure section of the 2024 finance bill. But it is unlikely to remain in the final copy of the government, which can choose the amendments it wants when adopting a financial text through point 49.3, which will probably be the case again.

Milk, vegetables, pork.

Forty-six deputies from seven groups of the National Assembly, including the Renaissance and the MoDem, who belong to the majority, jointly signed the text, which calls for “271 million euros to compensate for the losses of” milk, pork , large crops, fruits and vegetables between now and 2023. This situation generates “important desires for deconversion”, warned David Taupiac, deputy for Gers (Liot).

Without denying the existence of an organic “crisis”, the Minister of Agriculture, Marc Fesneau, stressed that it is a “demand” crisis, which involves supporting, in particular, through public procurement, as the State does with the a sum of 100 million euros.
