Storm Ciaran: what we know about the death of an Enedis agent on Saturday in Brittany

A 46-year-old agent who came from Occitania to help repair the power grid died of electrocution on Saturday night in Brittany.

A time of contemplation

The company learned of this death on Saturday afternoon, according to a press release that indicated that a moment of reflection would be held at the start of work on Sunday for the 3,400 employees and workers of the partner companies who mobilized on the ground to cope with the situation. Damage caused by storms Ciaran and Domingos, as well as for all employees this Monday morning, was confirmed by the president of the board of directors Marianne Laigneau this Monday morning. at the Franceinfo microphone.

Hundreds of thousands of homes were left without electricity in Brittany following the passage of Storm Ciaran overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, as in other regions, requiring emergency interventions by Enedis to restore supply.

“Particularly difficult conditions”

The fatal accident of the Enedis employee occurred around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday in Pont-Aven (Finistère). According to the first elements of the investigation, this 40-year-old man died from electrocution while manipulating damaged cables on a medium-voltage line, indicated the gendarmerie and the Quimper prosecutor’s office.

A judicial investigation was opened, entrusted to the Quimperlé gendarmerie company in collaboration with the labor inspection, to determine the circumstances of the death, indicated the prosecutor’s office.

“It has come as a reinforcement for the Midi-Pyrénées,” said Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister of Energy Transition, on X (formerly Twitter), more precisely from the small town of Auch, in Gers.

According to the newspaper, the intervention “took place in especially difficult conditions: at night, with cold, mud and storms.” Ouest-France specifies that the man, married and father of three children, received a 400-volt shock that caused him to go into cardiac arrest. Emergency services were unable to revive him despite an intervention that lasted an hour and a half.

“Despite the perfect coordination between the SDI (departmental fire and rescue service) and the gendarmes, despite the efforts of the doctor and the firefighters, the man could not be revived,” Christian Dautel lamented to the newspaper. The councilor also organized a tribute at the attached Nizon town hall this morning at 11am.

Extraordinary meeting of the CSE of Enedis this Monday

On the part of Enedis, an Enedis union source explained to Ouest-France that an extraordinary meeting of the Social and Economic Committee will be held this Monday at the Midi-Pyrénées regional directorate.

“Without a doubt, this will also be a topic of discussion during the Enedis national health, safety and working conditions committee, which met in ordinary session this Wednesday.” Since Sunday morning, the management of the electricity distributor has set up a psychological support unit for the colleagues of the deceased agent.
