No planes: the Parisian sky will be closed during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games

On July 26, for five hours, no aircraft will be able to take off or land at Paris airports. Flying over the capital will also be prohibited.

For security reasons, the Parisian sky will be closed during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games which will take place on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Specifically, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight, no aircraft will be able to take off or land at the Parisian airports of Roissy, Orly and Beauvais (except emergency services flights). Flying over the capital will also be prohibited. A closed perimeter of 150 kilometers will be established around the capital, with no altitude limit.

“The Air and Space Force will be responsible for respecting the prohibited and regulated areas of airspace that are thus established, through specific means of detection and intervention,” explains the Ministry of Defense and Transport.

“Regular users, airlines, professionals and individuals, will be invited to postpone their activity or avoid this area during the period in question,” he explains. Traffic rules can start at 5 p.m.

It is about seeking the “best balance between maintaining air activity and guaranteeing the safety of users and people,” continues the Minister of Transport.

Other exclusion zones to be planned

If you booked a ticket during this exclusion zone, your airline must notify you, offer you another departure slot, or compensate you.

Civil Aviation (DGAC) also specifies that other restricted and no-fly zones could be established during the Olympic Games, “to protect certain Olympic sites.” All these measures should be clarified next spring.

Remember that many flights should also be canceled between January and February in Paris, this time due to the implementation of new air traffic control software.
