Illuminated signs must be turned off in the event of a threat to electricity.

The measure can be implemented from Wednesday for “digital ads and ads whose operation or lighting can be controlled remotely.”

All luminous, illuminated or digital advertising must be extinguished “in the event of a threat to the security of the electricity supply,” according to a decree published this Tuesday, after the presentation of the energy sobriety plan by the Government.

The Ecowatt tool, designed as an “energy meteorology” and launched by RTE with the Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe), allows users to know in real time the level of electricity available in the country thanks to to a signal in three colors: green (normal), orange (tense) and red (very tense). In red, the signal is synonymous with unavoidable outages if nothing is done to lower or shift consumption.

The measure, adopted within the framework of the purchasing power law at the beginning of August, can therefore be applied as of Wednesday for “digital advertisements and advertisements whose operation or lighting can be controlled remotely”, and from June 1 of 2023 for the others.

Even in airports and train stations

A previous decree, published at the beginning of October, provided for the general prohibition, even in the absence of tension in the electricity supply network, of luminous advertisements at night between 1 and 6 in the morning throughout the French territory, with the exception of from airports, train stations or metro stations.

From now on, in the event of a strong tension in the electricity supply, all advertisements, even in airports, stations and public transport stations or stops, will be affected, however “compromising the objectives of public security, national defense as well as the safety of installations and sensitive works”, specifies the text of the law.

It will also affect interior announcements if they are “visible from public roads”, which must be turned off or, failing that, put on standby.
