The rubber sector is fundamental in the economic panorama

[CONTENU PARTENAIRE] Although the challenges of reindustrialization are topical in France, the rubber sector is mobilized to locate new productive capacities in the territory and regenerate the human capital of the profession. To do this, elanova supports manufacturers. Eric Laplace, president of elanova educationHe tells us about his ambitions.

What is the role of elanova, formerly the French Center for Rubber and Polymers?

elanova, rubber and union center, includes a training center, a technical center and a foundation. It is the rubber center par excellence. Since 1863, the union has acted to represent and defend the interests of the industry.

The name change took place on October 1, 2022. The name elanova evokes the DNA of the profession: ela for elastomers and nova for innovation. It translates the dynamics of the center that works for the recovery of elastomers into a CSR approach for the sector, reinforcing its role in the French economy.

How does your industry face the challenges of modernization, reindustrialization and ecological transition?

We are in an unprecedented context of rupture with the past economy, and our industry is active in the face of its challenges. Collectively, we are working on the (re)location of production activities in France. We pursue a double objective: to establish French leadership in the 4.0 rubber factory and to accelerate the shift towards the circular economy, thus aiming for zero waste by 2050.

Why is it important for you to attract young talent and modernize training?

Today, the needs of our industry are evident in terms of manpower and we are working on the brand image of our profession. elanova offers a full range of education and training in the rubber trade. Our desire is to attract young people and show that we are a clean industry and a place of fulfillment for them.

We are carrying out a project with the Ile-de-France region to develop immersive reality training. It is an ambitious project, which aims to be a call for fresh air for young talent, to reconcile economic and digital transition.

What does the rubber market represent and how is it in the current context?

The rubber sector represents 230 companies in France, with 480 production centers, 41,000 employees and a turnover of 12 billion euros, of which 60% is destined for export. The applications of rubber are very diverse and concern the entire French productive fabric.

Commodities, and in particular energy, are at historically high levels. Our industry mainly supplies sectors where pricing issues remain sensitive. Our companies are subject to these additional costs, the impact of which on their final prices continues to be a matter of great concern. However, the sector is holding up well and we have great projects for the future, with relay markets in energy, in sports with the Olympic Games and in public health.
