Domestic light and gas prices hit EU highs in the first half

Average prices for electricity and gas in the European Union (EU) broke records in the first half of this year, reaching €25.3 and €8.6 per 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh), respectively, Eurostat announced on Monday. .

Data published this Monday by Eurostat on electricity and gas prices in the first half of 2022 shows that the average value of light in household use in the EU has increased compared to the same period in 2021, at €22 per 100 kWh. in that period until now 25.3 euros per 100 kWh.

The same happened with the average gas price, which rose from 6.4 euros per 100 kWh in the first half of 2021 to 8.6 euros per 100 kWh in the first half of 2022.

In these data, Eurostat outlines the statistical series, which started in the first half of 2008, when the average value of light for household use in the EU was set at 16 euros per 100 kWh (versus 25.3 today) and the average gas prices 5 .8 euros per 100 kWh (against 8.6 today).

“More recently, wholesale electricity and gas prices have risen significantly across the EU. Energy and supply costs affected by the current geopolitical situation, the Russian military aggression in Ukraine, have mainly caused the increase,” justifies the community of the bureau of statistics.

These figures take into account national tariffs and taxes and correspond to an average of the 27 Member States or countries for which data is available.

According to Eurostat, compared to the same period in 2021, the weight of taxes and levies on final electricity and gas bills charged to EU households in the first half of 2022 has “reduced significantly as Member States have introduced subsidies and public support created to reduce high energy costs”.

Compared to the first half of 2021, for example, the percentage of taxes on the electricity bill in the first six months of this year has decreased from 39% to 24% and for gas from 36% to 27%.

By Member State, total domestic electricity prices in 22 EU countries increased in the first half of this year compared to the first half of 2021, with the largest increase (expressed in national currency) in the Czech Republic (+62%). , Latvia (+59%) and Denmark (+57%).

The five largest declines in domestic electricity prices between Member States were in the Netherlands (-54%), Slovenia (-16%), Poland (-3%), Portugal and Hungary (both 1%).

Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, gas prices rose in 23 of the 24 EU Member States for which data is available, the most in Estonia (+154%), Lithuania (+110%) and Bulgaria (+108% ).

There was only one Member State where natural gas prices for domestic consumers fell during this period, Hungary (-0.5%), as prices there are regulated, Eurostat adds.
