Experts discuss the future of the economy in an aging society

Adaptation, transformation and new opportunities. These are some of the concepts that summarize the first day of the International Congress “Economy of Longevity”, which will take place between today and tomorrow at Colégio Arzobispo Fonseca, in Salamanca, Spain.

Bringing together international experts in economics, this initiative discusses the future of society through research findings that point to the growth in average life expectancy around the world until 2100.

Richard H. Thaler (2017 Nobel Laureate in Economics), Andrew J. Scott (London Business School), Nicholas Barr (London School of Economics), Hervé Boulhol (OECD), Diego Valero (Novaster) and José Luis Escrivá (Minister for Inclusion, Social security and migration of Spain) are some of the speakers that marked the talks this Wednesday, focusing on the impact of longevity on health, education, employment and finance.

“Do we continue beyond the age of 65?” and “How can we adapt to this new reality?” These were the hypotheses that were questioned, taking into account the panorama in Spain and Portugal – countries with a high rate of aging.

“The 100-year life”, introduced by Andrew Scott, indicates that in the future there will be “more people aged 80 than 20”, requiring appropriate measures for the reality of the next generations.

In this sense, Richard Thaler believes that “society needs to improve the way older people can remain useful into retirement age”, which “requires an effort of generations to work for each other”.

Thaler also champions a necessary effort to increase the birth rate or encourage immigration, to combat the lack of young workers that could be seen in the coming years.

On the last day of the “Longevity Economy” conference, which ends this Thursday, Isabel Ferreira (Portugal’s Secretary of State for Regional Development), Daniela Bas (UN) and María Gafo (European Commission) will be present. .
