Despite Parliament’s votes, the government opposes the abolition of universal national service

Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon acknowledged, however, that the financial situation did not allow for “the generalization” of the SNU initially planned for 2026.

The government “does not want to eliminate the universal national service,” declared government spokesperson Maud Bregeon this Thursday, the day after a double vote in the Assembly and Senate committee aimed at eliminating this experimental device desired by Emmanuel Macron and which will be would become widespread in 2026.

“The current financial situation does not allow generalization,” acknowledged Maud Bregeon during her report to the Council of Ministers, estimating that “between repression and generalization there is a path because it is an experience that seems very positive to us for many young people.”
