The Banque de France orders Carrefour and Casino on the obligation to accept cash

This request against the two large retailers is due to the observation that the absence of staff in certain stores open on Sundays forced customers to pay for their purchases at automatic checkouts.

The Banque de France has reminded retail groups Carrefour and Casino of their obligation to accept cash payments in all their stores, director of fiduciary activities Christophe Baud-Berthier said on Wednesday. A reminder that arises when it was found that the absence of staff in some stores open on Sundays forced customers to go to automatic cashiers that did not allow payment in coins and bills.

“We remind the leaders of these two large groups that it was against the law,” explained Christophe Baud-Berthier during an intervention at the Economy Days in Lyon and broadcast online. A request made in writing “recently”, no response for the moment.

A pillar of the National Species Management Plan

The only exception: when the bills are counterfeit. But these are very rare, stressed the head of the Banque de France. Of every million banknotes in circulation in the euro zone last year, 12 were counterfeit.

According to Christophe Baud-Berthier, the airport administrator Groupe ADP had also withdrawn the possibility of paying for parking in cash since the Covid-19 period. The company put it back into service at the express request of the central bank.

The acceptability of cash payments in shops is one of the pillars of the National Cash Management Plan (PNGE), as is accessibility, for example, through good coverage of the territory by ATMs.
