The number of workers who became unemployed increased by almost 10% in the third quarter

The number of working people who went from work to unemployment increased by more than 9.5% in the third quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2021.

From July to September, some 55,100 people became unemployed while still holding jobs in the previous period, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveals.

This flow of new unemployed is also higher than in the second quarter (approximately 43.5 thousand cases).

That 9.5% increase is the highest since the first quarter of 2021, as the country experienced the deadliest and most complicated phase of the pandemic, as many hospitals collapsed.

In the new “Statistics of Flows between States of the Labor Market – 3rd Quarter of 2022”, which are taken from the latest quarterly employment survey, INE also shows that there was a year-on-year decline in the months of July to September in the number of people who have moved from unemployment to employment.

According to the institute, this flow, which is a positive sign for labor market dynamics, was 19% lower than in the third quarter of 2021.

This sharp decline can be explained by the fact that at that time, in 2021, the economy was recovering from the severe impact of the pandemic on employment and businesses.

Despite public support in 2020 and 2021, many companies and jobs ultimately did not resist.

According to INE, about 78.1 thousand unemployed people managed to find a job in the third quarter of this year (in the second quarter).

Despite the strong year-on-year decline, this group is still larger than in the second quarter (65.3 thousand in the period April to June).

However, according to official information published yesterday, this stream has been losing momentum for five quarters in a row.

between quarters

In its analysis between quarters (second and third), INE records that “of the total number of people who were unemployed in the 2nd quarter of 2022, 53.9% (160.9 thousand) remained in that state in the 3rd quarter of 2022, 26.1% (78.1 thousand) have moved to work and 20% (59.8 thousand) have moved to inactivity”.

“During the same period, almost one in three unemployed men (29.6%; 42.7 thousand) and almost one in four unemployed women (22.9%; 35.4 thousand) moved to work,” the Institute adds. up to it.

Between the two quarters surveyed, “approximately one in three was short-term unemployed (32.6%; 47.9 thousand) and one in seven people of the potential labor force [os que estão desempregados e os que estão nas franjas do desemprego] (14%; 22.5 thousand) in the 2nd quarter of 2022 moved to work in the 3rd quarter of 2022”.

“In the same period, 23.5% (70.3 thousand) of the unemployed switched to work for others,” the statistical authority reports.

It should also be noted that “of the total number of employees who had a fixed-term employment contract or other type of contract in Q2 2022, 19.3% (129.2 thousand) now have a permanent contract in Q3. ” of 2022″.

“About one in four part-time workers (24.1%; 94.2 thousand) switched to full-time work in the 2nd quarter of 2022,” the institute notes.
