The Stellantis factory in Sochaux, a historic Cun of Peugeot, has been arrested since Tuesday morning due to a mechanical failure, the management announced. “We have a mechanical breakdown since Monday morning in the Great Factory press,” said a spokesman for the Site of Sochaux (Doubs) on Wednesday, confirming the information from Belfort-Montbéliard.
The breakdown blocks the print sector, which consists of forming the metal parts, and makes it impossible to assemble cars. On Monday, the factory could normally produce thanks to the stock of available parts, but it stopped completely on Tuesday and several teams cannot work, “about 3,000 people”, depending on the administration.
A 5,400 tons press
“We cannot give a recovery date,” warned the spokesman, who said that “all teams are mobilized to solve the problem as quickly as possible.” The immense press, which can treat steel and aluminum, was inaugurated in June 2019. Weighs 5,400 tons and can press four pieces per strike. The factory produces the new Peugeot 3008 and 5008 generation and brings together a thousand cars per day.
At the end of May, the new general director of Stellantis, Antonio Filosa, had visited the factory by assuming the position. According to Force Ouvrière, more than 6,000 people work on the site.
