Little merchants begin summer sales this Wednesday morning … but they don’t really believe it. According to a survey* conducted by Syndendes Independents and VSES (SDI), 95% of small merchants will participate in the traditional period of summer promotions, but this decision is mainly submitted to. Six surveyed of ten (60%) say they will only participate for a competitive pressure ratio.
For most small merchants (61%), sales “have no real commercial interest” today, underlines the study of the SDI. A similar proportion (66%) evokes a “growing disinterest” of its customers for sales. If some mention the purchasing power (15%) and the loss of confidence in the discount (19%), a large majority (66%) points to the “permanent promotions” during the year to explain this disenchantment of consumers, which got into the habit “of a minimum level of discount” between electronic commerce and private sales.
-30% of the launch
Increasing store labels, the SDI study observes a higher and highest launching level reduction level of sales: 20% of respondents say they have increased their reduction level this year to deal with competition. For the summer of 2025, half of the small merchants interviewed (50%) say that sales will begin with a decomposition of 30%, while 21% will begin with a reduction of 40% or more.
In this context, only 40% of small merchants trust sales to rebuild their cash, although 68% of respondents declare that they find cash problems, 20% “important”.
