Faced with inflation, the French intend to open the portfolio a little more at Christmas. According to a study by CSA Research for Cofidis*, the average budget dedicated to Christmas celebrations this year amounts to 568 euros, 35 euros more than the previous year. This budget is much lower if we focus on the youngest, with an average of 420 euros for those aged 23-34… and much higher in the older part, with an average of 725 euros for the French over 65 years of age.
From toys to foie gras, Christmas logs and wrapping paper, Christmas will cost a little more this year due to inflation. For the French, whatever the expense items, the budget rises: 354 euros on average for gifts (27 euros more than in 2021), 127 euros for meals (+10 euros), 27 euros for decorations (+2 euros) , 23 euros for the evening dress (+2 euros) or 23 euros for transport costs (+2 euros).

Some fear that inflation will darken Christmas: just over one in two French people (53%) say they are concerned about the consequences of the economic situation on the end-of-year celebrations. To adjust the budget and stay within their costs, 23% of respondents will first limit spending on clothing, 19% on decoration and 18% on gifts. However, it is not about touching the sacrosanct Christmas meal, cited by only 5% of the French.
