The Metropolitan France has never told so many people who live under the poverty line since the beginning of the series in 1996. According to an Insee study, published on Monday, Hexagon had 9.8 million poor in 2023, a poverty rate of 15.4%, to a point in a year.
As a reminder, people are considered poor whose standard of living is less than 60% of the average standard of living (standard of living in two). However, this average level of living increased by 0.9% in 2023 after taking into account inflation, to 2,150 euros per month for a single person. So much so that the poverty line went from 1,276 euros to 1,288 euros.
The standard of living of the French modest of low decline, that of the richest and retired retirees
If the poverty rate has increased so much, it is because 30% of the most modest French saw their standard of living in 2023 unlike the rest of the population. First, due to the increase in the number of micro-entrepreneurs who increased the participation of households that declare low income of independent activities. Then, because the exceptional support for the purchasing power deployed in 2022 against inflation was not renewed, which mechanically reduced the standard of living of people who benefited from the following year.
At the same time, employee revaluations, the good job of employees (110,000 net creations between 2022 and 2023) and the increase in the performance rate of brochure A and LEP supported the purchasing power of the middle classes. On the other hand, the richest 10% saw an increase in their standard of living by 2.1% essentially due to “the increase in financial income promoted by the increase in interest rates and the increase in income from investments, in particular the locations and life insurance”, stresses that it also evokes “the last phase of the exemption of housing tax on the main residence that, in 2023, the most Breysty tax.” “.” “.” “.” “.” “.” “.” “.” “.” “.” “
The level of living of retirees has increased it faster than that of the rest of the population (+1.2%) thanks to the increase in equity income, as well as the revaluation of the basic regime pensions (+0.8%) and especially the pensions of the additional regime of Agirc-Arco (+4.9%). The poverty rate of retirees increases in spite of everything, but by “only” 0.3 points and remains much lower than that of the entire population, to 11.1%. On the contrary, the categories most affected by the highest poverty rates are unemployed families (36.1%) and a single comparative (34.3%).
The standard of living of the richest 3.5 times higher than that of the poorest
The decrease in the standard of living of the French modest in parallel with the increase in the richest living standard is reflected in a strong increase in inequality, the richest 10% has a standard of floor 3.49 times higher than the standard of living of 10% poorest. A proportion that exceeds its historical average without reaching the record level of 2011 (3.58).
On the other hand, the richest 20% of 20% captures 38.5% of the sum of the standard of living, 4.5 times more than the most modest (8.5%). An indicator that this time has been at the highest since 1996.
