The Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, warned against the perspective of a “commercial war within the west” this Sunday, July 13, the day after Donald Trump’s announcements that provide customs tasks of 30% in the products of the European Union (EU).
“A commercial war within the West would weaken us all in the face of the global challenges we face together,” Meloni said in a statement released by his services.
“Reach a fair agreement”
“Europe has the economic and financial power necessary to affirm its position and achieve a fair and common sense agreement. Italy will do its part. As always,” he added when the EU delays its response with the hope of an agreement.
Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the products imported to the United States from the EU and Mexico would be reached by customs tariffs in 30% as of August 1.
Meloni accused of “lowering his head”
Since then, the Italian opposition has criticized Georgia Meloni and his group of distant Fratelli of Italy, the president of the 5 -star movement (M5S) Giuseppe Conte in particular of “lowering her head” in front of Washington’s threats.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Brussels was not going to retaliate to US customs’ tasks about steel and aluminum at the moment, with the hope of obtaining an agreement to avoid greater taxes of 30% in all its exported products.
