“Will it happen? Yes”: German Defense Minister does not deviate from direct confrontation with Moscow (and wants to make more weapons)

The German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius exerts pressure on arms manufacturers to deliver orders and demands an increase in production.

Boris Pistorius does not have the tongue in his pocket. The German Defense Minister can be the country’s favorite politician. So much so that he maintained his position in the change of government between Scholz and Merz.

While Germany rearma at high speed, a small sentence of the minister In an interview with the Financial Times I made a great splash this Tuesday, July 15.

Questioned by the daily newspaper about the possibility of killing Russian soldiers in case of an attack against Moscow against an NATO Member State, Boris Pistorius does not.

But it is especially in the awakening of the German armament industry that the minister has extended more time.

Priorities are related in particular to drones, tanks and ammunition.

The German ambition is to bring the defense effort to 162 billion euros per year by 2029, an increase of 70% compared to this year, specifies financial times.

“The most powerful army in Europe”

This budget increase, in line with the objectives established at the NATO Summit at the end of June, should allow the industrialists of the sector to respect their market share and compensate for the delays observed in certain programs.

The minister said that the Ministry was studying acquisition plans in the area of tanks, submarines, drones and combat planes, according to the objectives of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to make Germany “the most powerful conventional army in Europe.”

Facilitate acquisitions

At the beginning of June, the president of the Federal Military Purchase Office to Annette Lehnnigk-Emden had declared the German newspaper Tagespiegel that the army had three years to acquire the necessary materials to defend against a possible attack by Russia.

An ambition that includes lightened purchase procedures, but also long -term contracts with “regular annual purchase bonds”, or even advance payments, explains financial times, to allow industries to invest in the long term in production capacities.

In return, the German industry must accept producing and delivering orders on time.

German industry in full boom

On the industrial side, political ambitions are based well on billing: the rheinmetall conglomerate has multiplied its action by 12 since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the participation of the military division of Aero Mtu engines is increasing, 27% of Renk’s billing is generated by sales to Germany.

The German defense industry is also being developed through associations concluded with foreign companies. Therefore, Rheinmetall announced cooperation with the American giant Lockheed Martin, but also with the American Andundil startup or the Finnish company Iceye, either to co -produce missiles, rockets, satellites, ammunition or even drones.
