Does Wetransfer use your data to train AI?

In an update of its service conditions, the file transfer platform implies that it could use the content it transmits through the site to cause IA.

“Use your content” or “transmit publicly”. Since July 15, Wetransfer has been prey to dissatisfaction with its users. When updating its service conditions, it has not escaped the surveillance of Internet users. A certain paragraph 6.3, in particular, Siws Discord. Indicates:

According to this text, Wetransfer suggests that the right to use the content transferred through the platform to supply IA is reserved. But that is not all, since Wetransfer also gives the right to “reproduce, distribute, modify, prepare derived works, disseminate, communicate to the public, show publicly and execute the users of the content.”

Direct users

Faced with the potential threat, several users punish, denouncing the theft of their files for the benefit of the IA giants. Above all, the document specifies that no compensation for the exploitation of the content was assigned.

From these few lines, a boycott wave emerged. Several Internet users are asking X and Bluesky to flee from the platform to profits of safer alternatives such as Smash, Dropbox or Swisstransfer.

These measures would go into force as of August 8. But in the face of the controversy, Wetransfer’s reaction was not long to arrive. As of July 15, the company changed the lines of its service conditions that were problematic, eliminating most of the controversial passages. From now on, we can read in paragraph 6.3 new conditions:

The text no longer mentions the improvement of its AI or the public dissemination of the transferred content. However, you have the possibility of using the files sent to improve your own services.

Wetransfer explanation

Contacted by him BBCWetransfer explained about these future quite vague measures. The platform has confirmed to the media that it does not use the content it transmits through the site to cause ia.

It justifies that the company wanted to “include the possibility of using AI to improve content moderation” and protect from any sensitive file that passes through the site. The last update of the conditions is now clearer to avoid any confusion.
