80 billion euros against 65: Europe extends the gap against the United States in military aid in Ukraine

The latest data from the Kiel Institute indicate that Europe has increased its military aid to Ukraine and far exceeds the United States.

Always more for Europe, less and less for the United States. The countries of the former continent have further increased their military aid in Ukraine in May and June, unlike the United States, and is increasingly based on its defense industry instead of existence of existing weapons, the German Institute of Research Kiel said Tuesday.

The Europeans, including the United Kingdom, gave or assigned to Ukraine 80.5 billion euros in total military aid between the beginning of the war and the late June, against 64.6 billion for the United States.

In total, since February 2022, and any type of help confused on June 30, Europe has granted 167.4 billion euros to Ukraine (and 90 billion more must be assigned), while the United States limits the limits of 114.6 billion, the Kiel Institute indicates.

European military aid is not weakened

According to the Institute, the accumulation of European military aid had exceeded the United States in spring, for the first time since June 2022.

From now on, the contracts made by Europeans to the industry are exceeding the orders of the United States, “marking a clear change in the use of arsenals towards industrial production,” explains Taro Nishikawa, head of the “Ukraine Support Tracker” of the Research Center.

In May and June, Europe allocated 10,500 million euros in military aid to Ukraine: Germany dedicated an aid package to 5 billion euros, followed by Norway with 1.5 billion and Belgium with 1.2 billion. The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Denmark have assigned between 500 and 600 million euros.

At least 4.6 billion euros in European military aid, or 44% of the total in May and June, take the form of supply contracts, which are mainly located with European -based defense companies, especially in Ukraine, according to the Kiel Institute.

At the same time, Washington approved important weapons exports to Ukraine in May, but not in the form of military aid in the sense of the Kiel Institute, since it is purchases that kyiv must be financed.

The United States back, Europe occupies the countryside

The United States was the main suppliers of help in Ukraine before returning to the White House, on January 20, by Donald Trump, who broke Joe Biden’s support strategy.

“I think (…) We have finished it with the financing of this war in Ukraine,” said American vice president JD Vance in an interview broadcast on Sunday at the Fox News conservative channel.

Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, must meet in Alaska on Friday to discuss, according to the US president, a possible agreement that provides “territorial exchanges” to end the war that has been unleashed in Ukraine since the invasion of Russia more than three years ago.
