School supplies: manufacturers compete with prices

The UFC -QA Choisir Consumer Defense Association had estimated in mid -July that school supplies had increased by 2% compared to July 2024.

The prices of school supplies decreased by 3.4% in supermarkets and 6.2% in specialized stores in July for a year, according to a study by the firm Nielsen IQ published on Wednesday and based on industrialists.

The study comes from the stationery association and office manufacturers (AIPB), which represents 145 national brands of school equipment and supplies.

His conclusions contrast with the figures of the Association for the Defense of UFC-Que Choisir consumers, which he estimated in mid-July that the prices of school supplies had increased by 2% compared to July 2024.

According to her, there are no “significant variations” of prices “between the first and the last weeks” of the campaign to buy school supplies, which extends from the end of June to the beginning of September.

However, it is “in mid -August that the stronger promotional operations are concentrated,” he continues.

Domination of national brands

UFC -quir recalled in mid-July that supplies prices knew “a peak at the time of the start of the school year, in early September.”

The AIPB also points out that the French have bought more supplies than in July 2024 (+9.1%), with the total turnover achieved in supermarkets and stores specialized at 131 million euros (+5.2%).

According to Nielseniq, “national brands still dominate the market” and represent “three articles bought from four.”

In supermarkets, perforated pockets (+21.5%volume sales), classifiers (+19.7%) and paper pencils (+15.9%) “are among the flagship products of the rear baskets,” says Samuel Giménez, consultant of Nielseniq, cited in the press release. In terms of specialized circuits, product writing stands out, with roller pens (+58.3%), recharges (+37.7%) and dances pens (+30.6%) at the top.

To help parents with modest income, the subsequent allocation (ARS) will be paid since August 19 in the Metropolitan France and Guadalupe, Guyana and Martinica. Its amount is between 423 euros for a child from 6 to 10 and 462 euros for a teenager from 15 to 18 years.
