The US president plans to announce “next week or that according to” customs duties that will be imposed on semiconductors, he said Friday before his departure to Alaska, where he must meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. “I’m going to announce new customs tasks next week or after Steel and, I think, in semiconductors,” said Donald Trump before addressing Air Force One.
Donald Trump presents his customs duties in particular as a means to encourage the relocation of factories, particularly in the sectors that he considers strategic, such as semiconductors, steel and aluminum, car or the pharmaceutical industry. “Everyone will come because they want to avoid customs tasks. If they are not satisfied here, they will have to pay, in some cases, 200%, 300%, I have not yet verified the rates,” he advanced, without specifying in which sectors he referred to.
Surcharge in pharmaceutical products
The US President had announced on August 6 his desire to impose the customs tasks of 100% on semiconductors, without specifying, however, specify the entry date of this new surcharge. At the same time, you want to impose a surcharge on pharmaceutical products, which will first be “a low customer right.”
He added that the rates applied, both for pharmaceutical and semiconductor products, must be known “during the next week.” Therefore, this announcement seems postponed for several days.
However, the possible establishment of customs duties on semiconductors concerns markets. The titles of Nvidia and AMD, two of the main manufacturers, lost 1.37% and 1.60% in the morning on Wall Street, respectively. With respect to steel, 50% of customs tariffs have already been applied since March to imports to the United States. Until now, the White House has suggested that a new increase should take place.
