The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, denounced on Monday the presence of thousands of components provided by foreign companies, in particular Americans, Germans or even Japanese, in missile and drone systems used by Russia to attack Ukraine this weekend.
“During the mass strikes on the night of October 5 (from Saturday to Sunday), Russia used 549 weapons systems containing 102,785 foreign manufacturing components,” Volodymyr Zelensky said on social networks. He cited the United States, China, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea and the Netherlands, accusing them of not avoiding these supplies.
These foreign companies provide, among other things, computer systems, microprocessors, sensors or converters from analog to digital, which allows the operation of missiles and drones, according to the Ukrainian president. Russian ballistic missiles such as Iskander or Kinjal use imported technologies from the United States, he said.
In addition, “drone microcontrollers are manufactured in Switzerland, while microfisors for flight control (of these vehicles) occur in the United Kingdom,” Volodymyr Zelensky said. “We have communicated proposals to reduce these supply habits. Our partners already have detailed data on which company and what the product is directed and how to react,” he said.
“Serious offense”
The British government, requested by AFP, said it was very concerned about the fact that the United Kingdom is mentioned. “We take extremely seriously the reports of assets of British companies found in Russian weapons systems,” said a spokesman, remembering the establishment of sanctions that affect trade with Moscow, especially war teams. “Failure to comply with sanctions is a serious crime subject to strong fines or criminal procedures,” he added.
Russia is currently intensifying its night air attacks against Ukraine, especially aimed at its electricity and causing energy cuts. During the night from Saturday to Sunday, almost 500 drones and more than 50 missiles arrived in the country, killing four people in the city of Lviv (West) and another in Zaporijia (South).
It was the largest attack in the Lvvvi region since the beginning of the Russian in a large scale in 2022, according to its governor Maksym Kozytsky. The Ukrainian president also said Monday in a forum of the International Defense Industry in kyiv that since 2022, “the skills of the Ukrainian defense industry have been multiplied by ten.” “More than 40% of the weapons used in the front are manufactured in Ukraine or produced with Ukraine,” he said.
