The publication of the American consumer price index (CPI) for September has been postponed until October 24 in the United States, where public services are paralyzed or slowed down due to budget paralysis.
The Department of Labor Statistics Service (BLS) announced the new date Friday on its website.
This index, which measures inflation affecting a broad basket of products and services, was initially scheduled to be published next week, on October 15.
Public services stopped
But the budgetary paralysis (“shutdown”) that has occurred since October 1 has put BLS officials on unpaid leave and has already prevented the publication of indicators, first of all the long-awaited monthly employment report.
The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday afternoon that the statistics department had begun calling for employees to be able to publish the CPI index this month, because pensions are indexed to this index.
“The publication will allow social security [le service versant les retraites et les allocations handicap aux Etats-Unis, NDLR] respect the legal deadlines necessary to ensure payment of benefits accurately and punctually,” the BLS writes.
It specifies that it will not publish any other indicators while the “closure” lasts.
