“It is super aggressive for our business,” Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday, during a lunch with elected officials on Capitol Hill.
The French president, on a state visit to Washington, lashed out at the subsidies provided for in Joe Biden’s great climate plan, which promote “made in the USA” products, describing them as “super aggressive” commercially.
He was referring to the massive support program for the energy transition that Joe Biden wants, called the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which grants generous subsidies to electric vehicles, batteries or renewable energy as long as they are manufactured in the United States.
“Put yourself in my place,” the French president pleaded. “No one contacted me when the IRA was in talks,” he continued, asking to be “respected as a good friend.”
“Perhaps this law will solve your problem, but it will increase mine,” said the French head of state, who warned of the risk of “destroying many jobs” if there is no coordination between Europe and the United States.
