Fighter of the future: Italy demands equal weight in partnership with UK and Japan

Italy’s defense minister has called for equal weight in the UK-Japan partnership for the Tempest, the sixth-generation fighter jet.

The British promise to present a Tempest demonstrator before 2030. But, for the moment, nothing has been done and everything is just beginning, in particular the distribution of roles between the three main partner countries, the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan.

According to Reuters, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, co-founder of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, appears concerned about Rome’s role. He demands equal treatment in the association with the other two countries. Guido Crosetto said the final decision on how much to invest in the multibillion-dollar project will only be made once those details have been ironed out.

other partners

Britain’s BAE Systems, Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Italy’s Leonardo Group are partners in the aircraft’s design, with the participation of European missile maker MBDA and other companies.

According to the Italian minister, there should be no obstacles to joining forces with the rival European programme, adding that other partners could join the three countries in the programme.
