Norway signs “biggest munitions deal” in history

Norway has awarded a €243 million contract to its national ammunition producer Nammo to replenish its ammunition stocks. This order includes long-range artillery shells.

Norway, a NATO member country bordering Russia, will replenish its ammunition stock with an order for up to 2.6 billion crowns (243 million euros) of artillery shells, the government announced Friday.

The Norwegian Ministry of Defense has reached an agreement with the national ammunition producer Nammo which, thanks to this “biggest contract” ever signed by the group, will be able to increase its production capacities.

“This creates a need for more military equipment, including ammunition, (…) because Norway and other countries have to reinforce their own stocks and because Ukraine is in dire need of military equipment,” he said, adding.

Increase production capacity

The Scandinavian country, which shares a 98-kilometre border with Russia in the Far North, has provided Ukraine with multiple military equipment, including artillery and ammunition, to defend against the Russian invasion.

The order announced on Friday will be for an unknown number of a new type of long-range (up to 40km) artillery shell, developed by Nammo.

With more than 2,700 employees, Nammo is owned equally by the Norwegian state and the Finnish Patria, controlled 50.1% by the Finnish state and 49.9% by the Norwegian group Kongsberg Gruppen.
