German growth slows in 2022, but does much better than expected

While the government was counting on growth of 1.4%, the German economy finally grew by 1.9% over the whole of last year despite the energy crisis.

The German economy slowed in 2022 but did better than expected with GDP rising 1.9% despite the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine weighing on activity, according to preliminary figures released on Friday.

The government counted on this fall with a growth of only 1.4% in 2022 with a drop in GDP in the fourth quarter, after a growth of 2.6% for the year 2021.

In France, for all of 2022, the Banque de France confirmed this week its growth forecast of 2.6% (versus 2.5% for INSEE), before an expected fall in 2023 with a forecast of only +0, 3 %.
