A massive challenge to pension reform? The mobilization “goes beyond what we thought,” Laurent Berger, general secretary of the CFDT, greeted this Thursday at the beginning of the demonstration in Paris, in the place of the Black Republic of the world. Also present in the Parisian procession, the general secretary of the CGT, Philippe Martínez, estimated for his part that “the million demonstrators (would) be exceeded.”
Indeed, the first figures reported by the authorities attest to a very large mobilization, generally calm: at least 36,000 people marched in Toulouse, 26,000 in Marseille, 25,000 in Nantes, 19,000 in Clermont-Ferrand, 15,000 in Montpellier… The unions announce for some of these cities even stronger mobilizations, with for example 140,000 people announced in Marseille.
What’s near you? The following map summarizes the number of people mobilized in the main cities of France, according to figures from the authorities, unions or local media.
In general, the levels are comparable or even higher than those of December 5, 2019: at the start of the protest against the previous pension reform project, the police had counted 806,000 protesters in France, the CGT 1.5 million.
