Pensions: does the Government still have room for maneuver to develop its reform?

The government says it is ready to change its pension reform, but its room for maneuver remains limited.

The day after the mobilization day and before the arrival of the bill in the National Assembly, the executive says it is ready to change its pension reform… but its room for maneuver is limited. Giving promises to convince the undecided and the opponents, without increasing the bill: that is the challenge of the government. Among the paths of development that have been mentioned, companies that present poor results in the “senior” index could be penalized. According to Gabriel Attal, Minister of Budget, this could be part of the discussions.

Which feeds the fears of businessmen, who are opposed: “Comparing companies does not make sense”, scolds the head of Medef, Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux. Such a measure will be difficult to implement: being older is an advantage in certain professions, much less in other more physical professions. Another problem: some companies, because they recruit a lot of trainees, will end up with a very low employment rate for seniors and risk being taken over by bad students. This measure, however, would have the advantage of not costing anything.

1200 euros net or gross

Another possible development would be to increase the minimum pension not to 1,200 euros gross but to 1,200 euros net. Ultimately, there is quite a small difference between the two sums, admits a presidential majority deputy. Finally, essential to approve the reform, the Republicans will fight so that those who started working before the age of 20 do not have to contribute for more than 43 years. Too expensive, he judges according to the majority, remembering that the balance of the reform is not negotiable. Therefore, the government’s room for maneuver is very limited.
