Pension reform: Bruno Le Maire sets the limits to improve the text

The Bercy boss recalled that it was necessary “to continue explaining, convincing and defending this reform” which he considers “fair”. As the debates in Parliament approach, the Minister of Economy and Finance has defined the margins of negotiation to modify the text.

The government refuses to play the astonishment card at the strong mobilization against the pension reform in the streets of the country yesterday. According to the authorities, 1.2 million people demonstrated while the unions estimate that the threshold of 2 million has been reached. “I am not surprised, said Bruno Le Maire on the Good Morning Business program. This mobilization is understandable and legitimate. We are a great democracy where everyone has the right to express their opposition to a government project.

The return to equilibrium as the only condition

The Bercy president recalled that the government was open to proposals to improve the text but that its consideration would be conditional on meeting the objective of returning to balance before 2030. “All the openings and discussions are interesting, all the proposals are useful.” but they must be part of a financial framework that guarantees a return to balance in 2030: this is an absolutely fundamental point of this reform”, explained Bruno Le Maire, who calls for parliamentarians to leave room for debate.

The member of the Government also mentioned the “two fundamental pillars of the reform”, the postponement of the legal retirement age to 64 years and the increase in the number of years of contribution to 43 life annuities in order to benefit from a full-time retirement , which you want to keep. “I also remind you that these proposals already represent a step forward, a concession compared to what the President of the Republic had proposed during the presidential campaign, declared the Minister of Economy and Finance. We had proposed 65 years and this was validated in the first round of the presidential elections by 28% of the French and then in the second round of the presidential elections.
