The number of unemployed rose by 4.9% in January compared to the previous month. Between December 2022 and January this year, more than 15,000 people will be out of work, the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security (MTSSS) reported on Monday.
The number of unemployed people who registered with the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP) in January showed a decrease of 9.5% compared to the same month of 2022, totaling 322,097 people.
The value of youth unemployment in January 2023 showed a decrease of 6.4% (minus 2,421 young people) compared to the same month of the previous year.
In January, 35,397 young people were unemployed and the youth unemployment rate (11%) to total unemployment remained in line with that of the same month (10.6%), the statement said.
Long-term unemployment decreased by 29% on an annual basis (50,477 fewer people). The rate of long-term unemployment (38.5%) relative to total unemployment also fell from that recorded in the same month (49%).
In January this year, there were 123,864 people in a situation of long-term unemployment, 1.8% more than in December 2022.
By region, there were year-on-year declines across the country, with the exception of Alentejo. The MTSSS highlights the 12.5% reduction in the Lisbon region.
At the sectoral level, there were year-on-year declines in the secondary (-8.6%) and tertiary (-9%) sectors, and an increase in the agricultural sector (+2.3%).
