Discussions about the taxation of the digital giants are at a standstill. Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire deplores this.
“Today things are blocked, in particular by the United States, Saudi Arabia and India. We will advocate for an unblocking of the situation” but “the chances of success are slim,” the minister declared during the press conference, pleading for a European solution. .
The minister recalled that France had already implemented taxation for large digital companies at the national level, which “provides us with close to 700 million euros a year.”
Minimum 15% tax on the table
The taxation of the digital giants is one of the two pillars, called pillar 1, of the agreement reached in the OECD to lay the foundations for fair competition worldwide in business tax matters.
The other pillar, called pillar 2, is the one that establishes a minimum tax of 15% on company profits.
In this regard, “things have gone well” and this minimum tax could be implemented “in the coming months,” according to Bruno Le Maire, although the United States will continue to apply its own system called Gilti.
