Larger electricity consumers save on the free market, regulated gas tariff is more competitive

Consumers with higher electricity consumption can save 39% to 44%/year in the liberalized market, but for natural gas there is no commercial offer on the free market that is more competitive than the regulated rate, reports Wednesday-Friday to ERSE.

According to the Electricity Commercial Offers Bulletin issued by the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE) for the first quarter of this year, “the comparison between the most competitive offer and the offer of the regulated market concludes that consumers with a higher annual consumption can generally save more in the liberalized market”.

“Type 1 consumer [casal sem filhos, um consumo anual de eletricidade de 1.900 quilowatts-hora (kWh), consumo em vazio de 40% e potência contratada de 3,45 kVA (kilovoltampere)] can save 176 euros/year on the electricity contract, while the type 3 consumer [família com quatro filhos, um consumo anual de 10.900 kWh, consumo em vazio de 40% e potência contratada de 13.8 kVA] can save 1,092 euros/year for the same type of contract”details from the regulator.

In the double contract “Savings compared to the regulated market vary between 82 euros/year (type 1 consumer) and 427 euros/year (type 3 consumer)”he adds.

According to ERSE, “in relative terms, the annual savings in the liberalized market can be between 39% and 44% compared to the electricity offer in the regulated market and between 13% and 19% compared to the dual offer with regulated prices”.

Rather, in natural gas offers “the savings in the liberalized market are nil, as there is no commercial offer more competitive than the regulated tariff, for the three standard consumers”.

Analyzing the different commercial electricity offers in the first quarter, ERSE concluded that for the type 1 consumer, the commercial electricity offer with the lowest monthly bill comes from Coopérnico (Coopérnico Base), with a value of EUR 23.01/month, which corresponds to with a discount of 39% and a monthly saving of 14.63 euros compared to the regulated rate.

With regard to consumer type 2 (couple with two children, with an annual consumption of 5,000 kWh, no-load consumption of 40% and contracted capacity of 6.9 kVA), the commercial electricity supply with the lowest monthly bill of LuzBoa (LUZBOA SPOT ), with a value of 55.08 euros/month, which corresponds to a discount of 42% and a monthly saving of 40.18 euros compared to the regulated rate.

This is also the lowest price commercial offer for type 3 consumers, with a value of €116.38/month, which corresponds to a 44% discount and a monthly saving of €90.97 compared to the regulated tariff.

With double offers (electricity and natural gas), Eni Plenitude (indexed rate) has the lowest monthly bill for the three types of consumers: for type 1 with a value of 44.31 euros/month, which corresponds to a 13% discount and monthly savings of 6.87 euros compared to the regulated rate; for type 2 with a value of 97.89 euros/month, which corresponds to a 19% discount and a monthly saving of 23.05 euros; and for type 3 with a value of 222.38 euros/month, which corresponds to a 14% discount and a monthly saving of 35.61 euros.

“On the basis of all commercial offers, it appears that the difference between the best offer and the regulated tariff in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the previous quarter, has increased very significantly for the three typical consumers”refers to ERSE.

According to details, from January to March, “the difference between the best offer and the offer on the regulated market corresponds to EUR 14.28/month, EUR 40.18/month and EUR 90.97/month, for consumers type 1, 2 and 3 respectively, taking into account with basis of all commercial offers”.

Regarding the natural gas offers, for consumers type 1 (with an annual consumption of up to 138 cubic meters – m3), the commercial gas offer with the lowest monthly bill is next to the regulated tariff of Eni Plenitude (PRO PREMIUM TARIFF), with a value of 20.17 euros /month, but still 49% higher than the regulated market.

For type 2 and 3 consumers (with a gas consumption of up to 292 m3 and 640 m3 per year respectively), the business gas offer with the lowest monthly bill is next to the regulated rate LuziGas (NATURAL GAS), with a value of 40,64 euros/month and 58% higher than the regulated rate in the first case and a value of EUR 84.47/month and 67% higher in the second case.

The double commercial offer with the lowest monthly bill is from Eni Plenitude (indexed rate) for the three types of consumers: for type 1 with a value of 44.31 euros/month, which corresponds to a discount of 13% and a monthly saving of 6.87 euros in relation to the regulated rate; for type 2 with a value of 97.89 euros/month 19% discount and a monthly saving of 23.05 euros; and for type 3 with a value of 222.38 euros/month, 14% discount and a monthly saving of 35.61 euros.

According to ERSE, in natural gas, “from the fourth quarter of 2022, the difference between the minimum gas offer price and the regulated tariff will increase sharply, with gas offer prices always higher than the regulated tariff”.
