If discounts have supported motorists’ purchasing power in the past year, they haven’t necessarily done business for big box retailers. Thus, according to the latest figures released this Thursday by the French Union of the Petroleum, Energy and Mobility Industries (Ufip EM), the market share of these major brands fell from 63.3% to 59.9% in 2022. .
This dominance of big retailers was notably eliminated by Totalenergies, which had implemented its own reductions last year, in addition to the government discount. These figures underscore a setback for mass retail, which had continued to rise in recent years.
A hundred service stations closed last year
The president of the UFIP, however, tempers this setback. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they soon regain a market share of around 63%,” Olivier Gantois specifies.
This renewed activity does not reverse a trend that has been observed for several years below the operational chain, namely the drop in the number of service stations: France has lost 100 in one year. The country has just over 11,000 today.
