Four in 10 employees do not feel able to work until retirement

According to a study by Dares, 37% of employees do not feel able to keep their job until retirement.

Nearly nine million people, or 37% of employees, don’t feel able to keep their job until retirement, a sentiment that diminishes when workers are given autonomy, according to a Dares survey released Thursday.

According to this study by the statistics service of the Ministry of Labor carried out in 2019 among 40,000 people, this feeling of “unsustainability of work” is significantly stronger among those under 30 years of age (59%) than among those over 50 years of age (18% ) who have often left positions more exposed and have a “closer horizon to retirement.” It is also very strong among women with young children (57%).

Occupations involving unskilled workers (handling, production lines), in contact with the public (cashiers, bank and hotel employees) or care workers (nurses and nursing assistants), are considered “less sustainable”, up to 66% for cashiers On the other hand, the “more sustainable” professions are exercised more in offices (computer technicians, secretaries, etc.).

More choppy runs

This feeling of unsustainability affects 58% of employees exposed to psychosocial limitations (intense work, emotional demands, socioeconomic insecurity, conflict of values, degraded social relationships, etc.), 46% of those exposed to physical limitations (noise, heat , humidity, standing work, transporting heavy loads, etc.) and 61% of those exposed to both.

These employees have more eventful careers than others and retire earlier, with breaks, particularly for health reasons, that increase at the end of their careers. But a third of employees in very good health still view their job as unsustainable. Organizational changes in the company are generally detrimental to the sustainability of work, unless employees participate in the decision.

Reducing this feeling involves reducing the intensity of work (being in a hurry, working under pressure, following a rhythm, etc.), increasing autonomy (choosing how to achieve objectives or doing things correctly) and greater social support (receiving help from others). colleagues, supervisor, etc.).

But it’s the mobility that makes the biggest improvement. “Leaving self-employment more than halves the probability of remaining in an untenable job three years apart,” the study says. Being self-employed is “associated with better health and a more favorable reconciliation between family life and professional life, despite longer working hours,” according to the study.
