Marcelo thinks it is “very fair” to guide “excessive use” in the prices of basic products

The president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said this Saturday that “it is very fair” to check possible “excessive use” in the prices of basic products and that for the rest “it is necessary to examine in detail the proposed measures known” by the government.

“With regard to excessive and unjustified use in all products, mainly in basic resources, this is very fair. As for the rest, it is necessary to know the ideas in detail,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The President of the Republic, who spoke in Gondomar, in the Porto district, on the sidelines of the extraordinary congress of the Portuguese Fire Brigade Federation, was questioned about the news put forward today by Expresso that the government is studying legislative changes to limit the profit margins.

“The main thing is to have the idea that it is not legitimate that, in addition to what inflation is caused by external costs and internal consequences, there are those who abuse it for speculative purposes. This needs to be checked and this is a concern that even the government has already expressed,” he said.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that everyone “expects and needs” that there is a recovery in growth, but recalled that “it depends very much on what happens in the world and in Europe”.

According to the Expresso piece, the government will act if prices of essential food products do not fall in the coming weeks.

The weekly writes that the executive branch is currently studying various measures and does not rule out the possibility that, for example, a limit will be set on the profit margins of producers, industrialists and distributors, for example.
