The president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, said this Wednesday that the bank is not committed to interest rates “ex ante”, so has not committed to raising them any more, nor has it ended with the hikes .
Speaking at a conference with ECB observers in Frankfurt, Lagarde stressed that “with heightened uncertainty, it is even more important that the pace of interest rate movements depends on data”.
This means, ‘ex ante’, that we are not locked into further rate hikes, nor have we halted rate hikes,” said the ECB president.
“In fact, as I explained last week, if the baseline scenario is confirmed in our most recent projections, we still have some way to go to ensure that inflationary pressures are eased,” Lagarde added in her speech.
